Multiple honours for former LFG researcher Doris Segets
We are delighted to report that Prof. Doris Segets, former LFG researcher and group leader, has been awarded the DECHEMA Prize 2020 and the Gottschalk-Diederich Baedeker Prize 2021. Prof. Segets studied Chemical and Biological Engineering at the FAU, completed her doctorate at LFG in 2013 and led the Erlangen-based Interdisciplinary Centre for Functional Particle Systems until 2018 when she took up her current post as Juniorprofessor for the Process Engineering of Electrochemical Functional Materials at the Center for Nanointegration Duisburg-Essen (CENIDE) of the University of Duisburg-Essen. Her highly interdisciplinary research encompasses nanoparticle technology, the characterisation of nanomaterials and the structure-property relationships of new materials along the process chain.
The DECHEMA Prize is awarded by the German Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology to early career scientists for outstanding achievements in engineering research. The prize recognises highly original work and its contribution to scientific and technological progress being performed at European universities, research institutes or in industry. Awarded since 1951, the 2020 edition of the prize was presented to Doris Segets for “her pioneering work on the development of a process engineering of ultrafine particles at the interface of colloid chemistry and nanotechnology”. The prize was presented by former and current DECHEMA executive directors Prof. Dr. Kurt Wagemann and Dr. Andreas Förster at a hybrid ceremony on 5 July 2021, where a small number of guests gathered in Duisburg and a much larger audience attended online via livestream. Following Prof. Segets inspiring overview of the field encompassing her activities, under the intriguing title “Nanoparticle processing: Bridging the valley of death for energy applications”, the short scientific symposium concluded with presentations by Prof. Dr. Ruud van Ommen (TU Delft) and Dr. Julia Lyubina (Evonik Operations GmbH).
The Gottschalk-Diederich Baedeker Prize is awarded by the Essen-based G. D. Baedeker Foundation for outstanding work by young researchers on topics of high social and technological relevance and for excellence in technology transfer and outreach. In his citation of the prize, the chair of the Baedeker Foundation, Martin Sutter noted “It was not only her scientific work, which has already won many awards, that convinced the jury. She also scored points for her ability to build and maintain networks with partners at the university, technology transfer institutions, but especially with small and medium-sized enterprises and industrial partners. Equally impressive is Prof. Segets’ commitment to young researchers, whom she promotes intensively. We are very pleased to be able to honour such an outstanding scientist.”
All at LFG congratulate Doris Segets, who, in her many years at the institute, left an indelible mark with her extensive and excellent research activities and inspirational character.
